About Project
The ‘Tailoring and Stitching Programme’ came about as a result of our supervisor’s consultation with the local women and it currently runs the whole year, doubling as a women’s group on and off. SWL subsidizes the programme by paying for the teacher, the infrastructure and the maintenance of the machines, and students then bring their own material. Importantly the course provided the women a reason to step out of their homes:
Sunita clarifies this was
“A logical rational reason for going to another space and doing something there… A space they can designate for themselves. They stitch for themselves and their family. And they sell to others. They get a real sense of ownership and responsibility.”
Our Aim :
- Capacity building of women in the Sangam Vihar slum area;
- Income generation;
- Imparting dignity and raising status in the family.
Methodology:
- Training in Knitting of mufflers, stoles, etc.
- Pattern cutting for better production
- Stitching
- Marketing
